Roosvelt seniors students had the opportunity to visit the USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7).

It is the seventh WASP class multi-purpose amphibious assault ship. The principal mission of WASP class ships is to transport troops by sea and air to a land battle and to serve as the command ship of an Amphibious Ready Group.
When launching an amphibious assault, the LHD class ships provide an "Over the Horizon" strike capability, which allows the ship to launch amphibious vehicles while remaining a safe distance from the shore.

IWO JIMA uses a variety of vehicles and systems to meet this "Over the Horizon" mission including Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), Landing Craft Units (LCU) and Armored Amphibious Vehicles (AAV).IWO JIMA carries an assortment of Marine Corps helicopters. The CH-53E "Super Stallion," and CH-46E "Sea Knight," provide troop and supply transport capability.
