Dear Laura

Here is an updated about the Alcanzando Metas Foundation. With the support of a grant from the Children & Youth Investment Trust Corporation the Alcanzando Metas Foundation will continue to develop this curriculum through the 2007-2008 school year. Development will focus on testing curriculum concepts, instructional delivery strategies, and the students' use of materials. By the spring 2008, the foundation will stand more ready to establish new programs with a tested, revised curriculum and materials. The foundation believes in conducting this development in a spirit of collaboration with the students and teachers that will apply the curriculum. After all, Alcanzando Metas is a family of professionals pursuing a common vision of academic achievement.

Class 2007

With the support of a grant from the Office of Latino Affairs, Verizon Wireless, Verizon Foundation, and and many hundreds of hours of volunteer time and effort the newly established Alcanzando Metas Foundation implemented an education project for a year, from October 2006 to 2007. In that year, the foundation met its objectives in establishing a new after-school enrichment program at Theodore Roosevelt High School. The program trained its high school students in more effectively managing their academic work and communicating in English. The resulting program served as a community of resources and mentors for the students, some of whom graduated from the high school as successful seniors.

Be a Mentor
Transforming Latinas: A Mentoring Program across Generations"

We are pleased to announce that Alcanzando Metas Foundation is launching a formal youth mentoring program. In my life, I've experienced first-hand the impact that encouraging, listening and role modeling can have on a student's life. Mentoring programs give us each a chance to contribute to the youth in our communities. Many of you may already participate in mentoring activities, whereas others (like me) are ready to take this next step through the Alcanzando Metas Foundation Mentoring Program. I hope you will join me.

The Mentoring Program pairs our After-School Program student participants with strong role models who provide them with a positive influence. Mentors help the participants reach their full potential. Mentors are carefully selected to inspire the students with the value of academics while providing guidance and motivation. Each mentor works one
