Alcanzando Metas foundation receives proclamation from Mayor Anthony Williams
Hispanic/Latino young women now have a new advocate in Washington, D.C.: the Alcanzando Metas Foundation. At a luncheon at the City Club on Thursday, 28 September, Mr. Gustavo Velasquez of the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs presented a proclamation announcing the funding of a new after- school enrichment program aimed at keeping young Hispanic/Latino women in school. The program, slated to begin at Roosevelt High School in October 2007, aims to apply Stephen Covey’s 7 Effective Habits to academic excellence. The program is the first in a series of programs Alcanzando Metas plans to launch over the next few years.

After School at Roosvelt High School
| by Dr. Thomas Nowalk |
Alcanzando Metas aims to better the odds for the Hispanic young women at Roosevelt High School, at a time when America will increasingly rely on growing minority populations to fill in the workforce gaps. Improving the odds will require attention to the core subjects of English, mathematics, and science. The literature suggests that an after-school program repeating the regular school model will not go far enough to address the students’ needs; Alcanzando Metas holds that the work of Stephen Covey offers a new, innovative solution to addressing the students’ needs. How to apply Covey’s 7 Habits to Roosevelt High though, depends on learning more about the students learning styles and preferences.
We are looking for mentors: The Mentoring Program pairs our After-School Program student participants one-to-one with strong role models who provide them with a positive influence and help them reach their full potential. Mentors are carefully selected to inspire the students with the value of education while providing guidance and motivation to maximize the impact of this program. We meet every wednesday from 3:15 to 5:15 Roosevelt High School 4301 13TH ST NW Washington, DC 20011 If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Dr. Adriana Avalos, Executive Director of HPWA at adriana@ametas.org
