Veronica Torres from Roosevelt High School and Monserrat de la Rosa from Wilson High Schoo

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!

I am Monserrat de la Rosa Cruz. I was born in Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. I grew up on the small town of Telixtlahuaca. My town is north of Oaxaca. At the age of 5, I started elementary school. I finished my 4th grade in 1999. Weeks later, my grandmother, Vicenta AvendaƱo, called my father and told him that we had to go to Ciudad Juarez because we were going to have a meeting with the immigration office. When we finished the meeting, the man with whom we were talking told us that we were going to get our residencies. A residency is a document that allows you to enter the United States legally. My grandmother did this because she wanted my two sisters and I to have a better education and future. You see, my grandmother, did not finish 3rd grade. She had to go to the city and find a job to help her mother financially. But thanks to her intelligence and diligence, she learned to write and speak English.

My father Jose Luis is a hard working man that loves to bring food home for his family. My mother Minerva Marisol and my father both completed some junior high school, but did not finish. My parents both work as custodians in the District of Columbia Public Schools. But their dream is for me to go to college so I do not have to start from the bottom like they did. They want me to have a quality job that would give me a good financial future for my family. Mom and dad please stand. I want to thank you at this time for your hard work and support.

This scholarship and as well the Alcanzando Metas Foundation is giving me the opportunity to continue with my studies and become what my grandmother, mother and father would like me to become. I would like to send a message to the Hispanic community and specially girls my age, that if you work hard to reach out for your dreams, many doors will open to you. But most importantly, the scholarship and Alcanzando Metas Foundation will enable me to achieve my goal to become a pediatric nurse.

I am grateful for your generosity and your faith in me.

Thank you.
