Parenting Center
The “All Our Relatives” Parenting center is meant to serve as a resource and meeting center that engages parents and caretakers in a setting conducive for sharing information.
The center has these goals
· To provide different language resources about school policy, contacts, and support services of use to the community.
· To provide translators that can assist families with speaking to school administrators of interests or concerns pertaining to their children.
· To provide monthly workshops to parents on supporting their child’s academic progress.
· To provide college preparation materials and support services for students considering college.
· To recruit parents for participation in the PTA or other school activities.
· To provide a center for contact between the parents and other community organizations that support education.
· To attract parents to attend Parent Conferences to provide guidance for engaging teachers and to discuss students’ progress.
Overall, the program is meant to upgrade the existing parent center at the school with materials, services, and social activities that introduce Hispanic families to the wider network of school staff, community organizations, and non-Hispanic communities that have a stake in the education of young Latinos.
A second function of the center is to promote stronger relationships between the teachers and the community. With the help of the bilingual guides, teachers have greater access to students’ families and concern. In other words, the parent center should automatically become a teacher center, too. In this role, the “All Our Relatives Center” has these purposes
· To serve as a meeting place with families, a neutral setting for parents and teachers.
· To provide English language materials and information on working with ELL students.
· To provide contacts for teachers to the community and its resources.
